Natural preservatives and antioxidants in Dog Food: What Is It and Is It Safe?

I have been reading ingredient labels on dog food bags for years.

The most common natural preservatives are vitamin E (often labelled as mixed tocopherols), vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and rosemary oil. All of these can dramatically slow down the rate at which fats go rancid.

Here is the thing. Virtually all dry dog foods contain some form of preservative. You cannot make a shelf-stable kibble without them. The question is whether those preservatives are natural or synthetic. Natural preservatives will never be as efficient as their artificial counterparts. That is just chemistry. But most naturally preserved dry foods still maintain a shelf life of 12 months. That is plenty of time for a bag of kibble to sit in your pantry before your dog eats it. I have seen brands like Farmina commit to using only natural antioxidants. According to Farmina, all of their Vet Life and Natural & Delicious products are preserved using only natural antioxidants, specifically tocopherol rich extracts. That is a real commitment. Not every brand does that.

Synthetic preservatives in dog food are chemicals added during manufacturing. They are sprayed on the outside of food to retard spoilage, discoloration, or contamination by bacteria. The most common ones you will see on labels are BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, and TBHQ. According to Dogs Naturally Magazine, BHA has led to precancerous tissue in the stomach, retarded growth, behavioral effects, and increased mortality in offspring in animal studies. It is also considered a hormone disruptor. BHT is a potential hepatotoxin, meaning it is toxic to the liver, and can lead to hepatic carcinoma. That is liver cancer. TBHQ has been found by the National Library of Medicine to cause liver enlargement, neurotoxic effects, convulsions, and paralysis in laboratory animals. I am not saying these things to scare you. I am saying them because the research exists. And you should know about it.

There are natural alternatives that work. And they work well enough. According to All About Dog Food, the most common natural preservatives are vitamin E (mixed tocopherols), vitamin C (ascorbic acid), and rosemary oil. All of these are able to dramatically slow down the rate at which fats go rancid. I want to talk about tocopherols for a second. Because this gets confusing. Tocopherols are a family of compounds made up of different forms of vitamin E. Alpha-tocopherols are the preferred form. These are a combination of alpha, beta, delta, and gamma-tocopherols. Mixed tocopherols are found in vegetable oils as well as grains, seeds, and nuts. Here is a trap. A 2018 study published in the Journal of Veterinary Research compared five natural antioxidants to the synthetic preservative BHA in dog food. The researchers tested curcumin, cranberry, pomegranate, grape seed extract, and acai berry. They stored the food at 55 degrees Celsius for 12 days. That is an accelerated shelf life test. The results were pretty clear. Curcumin, cranberry, pomegranate, and grape seed extract all reduced lipid oxidation better than the control. Acai berry did not work as well. But here is the kicker. Curcumin and grape seed extract actually preserved higher concentrations of EPA and DHA than BHA. Those are the omega-3 fatty acids you want in your dog's food. The study concluded that, except for acai berry, the tested natural antioxidants could be used as a substitute for BHA in dog food. I find that reassuring. Real science showing that natural options can do the job.

Preservatives and antioxidants are not the same thing. Preservatives work to reduce microbial growth like mold. Antioxidants are there to prevent the oxidation of fats. Oxidation is what makes fats go rancid. That rancid smell. That stale taste. Antioxidants stop that from happening. So when you see "natural preservatives" on a dog food label, you are mostly looking at antioxidants. They are doing the heavy lifting of keeping the fat fresh.

I have a personal rule. If a brand uses synthetic preservatives like BHA, BHT, or TBHQ, I put the bag back on the shelf. There are too many good options using natural preservatives to take the risk. Brands like Farmina have shown that you can make a shelf-stable product with natural antioxidants. Iams also uses a special blend of mixed tocopherols, or natural antioxidants extracted from vegetable oils. So the big guys are doing it too. But here is the thing about natural preservatives. I have seen some people worry that natural preservatives are not strong enough. That their dog's food will go bad before they finish the bag. In my experience, that is not a real problem. Most dogs go through a bag of food in a few weeks. The 12 month shelf life is more than adequate.

Iams also uses a special blend of mixed tocopherols, or natural antioxidants extracted from vegetable oils. These are big brands making a commitment. But not all natural-sounding ingredients are actually natural. I already mentioned dl-alpha tocopherol. That is synthetic. Made from petroleum. Avoid it. Also watch out for ascorbic acid. That is the chemical version of vitamin C. It is used to prevent foods, especially fruits and meat, from browning when exposed to the air. It is generally considered safe. But it is not the same as getting vitamin C from whole food sources.

TBHQ has been found to cause liver enlargement, neurotoxic effects, convulsions, and paralysis in laboratory animals. I do not want any of that in my dog's food. And I do not think you do either.

So what should you look for on a label? Look for mixed tocopherols. Look for rosemary extract. Look for ascorbic acid. Those are the natural ones. Avoid BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, propyl gallate, propylene glycol, and TBHQ. Also watch out for sodium benzoate and benzoic acid. These may be genotoxic. They can damage the genetic information within a cell and cause mutations. They can also cause skin rashes and itchy, inflamed skin. I know this is a lot of information. But here is the simple version. If you see mixed tocopherols, rosemary extract, or ascorbic acid on the label, you are good. If you see BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, or TBHQ, put the bag back.

One more thing. The best way to avoid synthetic preservatives entirely is to feed your dog a fresh, whole food diet. Raw meat. Fresh vegetables. No processing needed. But I know that is not realistic for everyone. Kibble is convenient. It is affordable. And it can be perfectly healthy if you choose the right one. So do your homework. Read the label. Look for natural preservatives. Your dog will thank you.
